Bread for the World

"Someone who sits down and writes a letter about hunger almost literally has to be saving a life."
Paul Simon - U.S. Senator from Illinois (1985-1997)

Would you save someone's life if you had the power? Of course you would!

And you do have the power if you take to heart the words of former Senator Paul Simon. Many of us already help alleviate hunger by donating money or groceries to food banks but, with so many hungry people in the world, we would like to do more.

Bread for the World. . .

is a collective Christian voice urging our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. A single decision by Congress can provide needed help to millions of people and this is why your letters are so important.By changing policies, programs and conditions that allow hunger and poverty to persist in the world, we provide help and opportunity far beyond what one individual can do.

Your Letters to Congress

But your letters to Congress are necessary to make the change happen because the poor cannot afford lobbyists.

Tax Measures Expire

Since several tax measures expire this year, the 2010 goal of Bread for the World is to pass legislation to protect and strengthen tax credits that benefit low-income families in the United States. These programs work. In 2005, the Earned Income Tax Credit alone lifted more than 5 million people above the poverty line so these families had more money left for food after paying necessary fixed expenses.

Offering of Letters was on Sunday, April 18

Hope Lutheran had an Offering of Letters, but you can learn more by going to offeringofletters.org right now. The web site explains how the Earned Income Tax Credit works and also contains a sample letter to Congress.Remember you may be saving a life!
