LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF QUILTS

Quilts distributed by LWR to refugees and other people in need were first made by recycling old but good clothes, blankets, and other items. Most LWR quilts are still made this way, although fabric samples, remnants, or other new pieces of fabric are also used. Each quilt is one of a kind, with a beauty all its own, made as a gift of hope by caring people.

Over the past six months, 119 quilts were made and sent to Lutheran World Relief. An LWR quilt is special! It brings warmth on a cold night, shelter from the sun on a hot day. It becomes a bed, a room divider, a backpack to carry belongings and at times even a home for people in poverty around the world.

Needle"Works" Prayer Shawls

"Pray continually." 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Needle "Works" is made up of caring knitters and crocheters who craft shawls laden with prayers. The prayer shawl is given to someone special as a loving reminder of God's presence. The quiet prayers and busy needles create shawls that bring physical warmth and spiritual comfort. Whispered prayers of hope mingle with the strands of yarn. The love of Jesus is expressed through a caring embrace, the embrace of a prayer shawl wrapped comfortingly around the shoulders of another.

Join us!

Needle"Works" meets the first and third Monday of each month, 7:00pm at the North Campus. Join us in fellowship to knit and crochet prayer shawls that are delivered to hospitalized and homebound members of Hope Lutheran.

Special Outings are posted in the Announcements on the front page of the website.

Prayers include:

  • "In the name of the Father, the Creator, the Giver of Life, and the Holder of time; In the name of Jesus, the Savior, the Healer, and the Lifter of pain; In the name of the Spirit, the Comforter, the Counselor, and the Sustainer of Life, I knit this shawl as a mantle of caring. I knit a mantle of protection. I knit a mantle of wholeness. I knit a mantle of healing. I knit a mantle of patience. I knit a mantle to enfold you. I knit a mantle to encircle you. I knit a mantle to empower you. May this prayer shawl warm and comfort you when you are weak and weary."

  • "O Christ, who healed the broken in body and spirit, be with all who suffer today. Be with the doctors, nurses, technicians, and all that care for the sick. Be with the families and friends of those who love and comfort the sick. May your gentle, yet strong touch reach out to heal all the broken and hurting people and places in our world. I ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen."

Can't make it to a Needle "Works" gathering? You can make shawls, washcloths, afghans, hats, scarves and pot holders at home and drop them off at either campus.

HopeCare makes a difference:

"Dear HopeCare, Thank you for the beautiful prayer shawl you made. We gave it to our daughter who has breast cancer. She is still receiving chemotherapy and then she will have radiation. The shawl has boosted her spirits and we really appreciate your prayers. Thank you so much."

"We want to thank you so very much for the basket full of goodies your "angel" delivered to us at the infusion area of Roger Maris Cancer Center. The Prayer Shawl is so pretty and very comforting. Your loving kindness, concern and prayers are truly appreciated. Prayers are definitely helpful as we start the 3rd year of treatments for my husband. May God bless you all."

"Dear HopeCare, Thank you for the beautiful prayer shawl that you brought me the other evening. It came as such a surprise. It is so nice to have over my shoulders as I sit here in the evening reading. It's on my chair during the day reminding me that people are praying for me."
